Battle of the Brow Gels: Benefit vs Essence

Battle of the Brow Gels header

Welcome back everyone! Some of you may remember that I wrote a comparison review on the Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil and the Models Prefer Retractable Brow Pencil, which was really well received (you can read it here). I thought I’d do a little part 2 for you today and compare the famous Benefit Gimme Brow brow gel to the Essence Make Me Brow brow gel (a highly comparable, but way more affordable product).

What they are…

Both brow gels are tinted and contain fibres to boost the volume of your brows. You can use them alone, or over the top of brow pencils, powders, or pomades to set the brows in place, while also adding colour.

The packaging…

Of course, Benefit hits it out of the park yet again for this category. The original packaging of Gimme Brow actually looks a lot like the Make Me Brow, but with its redesign a little while ago we are spoiled with luxe silver packaging and the cutest geometric details. Packaging is certainly not the most important thing here though, so even though the Gimme Brow is way prettier to look at, it’s the product inside that really counts.

The product…

Benefit’s Gimme Brow is available in three different shades, so finding your natural colour match is a little more likely than with the Essence Make Me Brow, which offers only two shades. I have shade 3 (Medium) in the Gimme Brow which is a perfect match for me, and I have both shades (01 Blondy Brows and 02 Browny Brows) in the Make Me Brow and use both of them for different occasions and needs.

Gimme Brow has a tiny spoolie brush that makes coating your brow hairs super easy and not messy at all. The product has more of a thick gel-mousse texture and the coverage is good – I love wearing this product alone. It doesn’t make my brows feel “crunchy” and stiff like some other hardcore brow gels, which I like. The result is really natural. This product claims to be water-resistant and long wearing and I have found this to be the case. I’ve never gone swimming with this product on, but it lasts well throughout a long day and in the hot weather.

Make Me Brow has a slightly larger spoolie, but it’s still small enough to coat your brows with ease. The formula is a bit more wet, and it can be messier than the Gimme Brow; however, as the product is so wet it can easily be wiped away if you get some on your skin. This leaves my brows feeling much the same as Gimme Brow does, but I do think that the Gimme Brow is more successful at making my brows appear thicker. I have also had no issues with the wear time of this product – I find it lasts fine throughout a long day and in the hot weather.

The price…

The price difference between these two products is HUGE. The Benefit Gimme Brow is available in two sizes: 3 grams (full size) for $39.00 AUD or 1.5 grams (travel size) for $21.00 AUD (note: I have the travel size, which is only available in shade 3). The Essence Make Me Brow is only $5.10 AUD for 3.8 mL of product. So, it’s slightly more product than the larger Gimme Brow for an eighth of the price!

Final thoughts…

Overall, I think the Benefit Gimme Brow is a superior and better quality product – the packaging is beautiful, I prefer the spoolie size and texture of the product, and the colour is spot on. For the price, I would expect this product to be amazing, so I’m happy it is. On quick makeup days, this is the only thing I put in my brows and I think they look great. I honestly love this stuff. The only downside is the price – it’s a hefty price tag on such a small amount of product and it’s difficult to keep repurchasing this product, particularly when the product expires after six months.

The Make Me Brow is so affordable and for that reason I have purchased it time and again in both shades. I do get a lot of use out of this product – when used over the top of a pencil, powder, or pomade you really cannot tell the difference between the two brow gels. It’s only when used alone that I prefer the Gimme Brow, as I find it creates a more natural and fuller look to the brows. I really can’t complain about the Make Me Brow though for that price – it’s great to have on hand and I think it’s an excellent alternative for those on a budget. Essence Cosmetics is getting more accessible here in Australia (a couple of years ago it was really hard to find) and I can usually find this product in either my local Priceline or Target.

The brow on the right side has been filled in both photos – the top photo I used Gimme Brow and the bottom photo I used the darker Make Me Brow. The Gimme Brow definitely does a better job of filling in my brows and making them appear thicker & fuller.

I hope you enjoyed this comparison review of the Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow and the Essence Cosmetics Make Me Brow brow gels. What is your favourite brow product to use? Am I missing out on something amazing out there? Let me know in the comments below!

Much love,

    1. It’s expensive but I think it is worth it – I use it every day and I have to force myself to make use of the Essence one so the Benefit lasts longer – I think that is a real sign! At least you can buy a smaller size first to see if you think the investment is worth it or not! 😊 Thanks for reading! 💕
